Folding Television Tables: A Sturdy and Stylish Solution
Folding Television Tables offer a convenient and space-saving solution for smaller living spaces or those who need a versatile surface for their entertainment needs. This article explores the design and construction of a robust and stylish folding TV table, inspired by a vintage model from the 1960s. This table boasts impressive stability, a generous surface area, and a clever folding mechanism for easy storage and portability.
Building a Durable Folding TV Table
Unlike flimsy, commercially available folding TV trays, this DIY project focuses on creating a table that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Constructed primarily from oak with a Formica top for durability, the table features a linseed oil finish for a classic look.
The table’s dimensions provide ample space for not only a television but also for activities like playing cards. Its sturdy design ensures it won’t easily tip over, providing a secure platform for your electronics.
Ingenious Folding Mechanism and Easy Portability
A key feature of this table is its simple yet effective folding mechanism. The design incorporates a built-in carry handle, making it effortless to move and store when not in use.
Construction Details and Materials
The table’s construction involves straightforward techniques and readily available materials. The legs and support arms, measuring 29″ and 16″ respectively, are made from 1-3/4″ x 3/4″ oak. 5/8″ dowels and strategically placed holes ensure secure joints and smooth pivoting action for the folding mechanism.
Two 2″ x 5/8″ x 19″ spreaders provide additional stability and connect to the legs with drilled holes. The tabletop, constructed from two halves of 3/4″ pine (or ideally Baltic Birch) covered with Formica, features indexing dowels to prevent sliding and enhance rigidity. Oak edging adds a touch of elegance and protects the edges of the tabletop.
Assembly and Finishing Touches
Assembling the table involves gluing short dowels into pre-drilled holes in the legs and support arms. The 16″ dowel serving as the handle is glued only to the inside legs, allowing the support arms to pivot freely. Spreaders are attached to the legs, and support arms are secured to the tabletop using drywall screws.
Finally, a linseed oil finish is applied to all oak surfaces except the tabletop edges, which are varnished for added protection.
This meticulously crafted folding television table offers a blend of strength, style, and practicality. Its clever design and durable construction ensure it will provide years of reliable service.
