Can We Gift a Television Islamically?

The permissibility of gifting a television, or accepting one as a gift, in Islam depends on its intended use. If the television will be used for permissible purposes such as watching educational programs, news, or halal entertainment, then gifting it is permissible. However, if it is intended for haram purposes like watching movies with explicit content, promoting violence, or other prohibited content, then gifting it would be considered haram.

It is important to note that while accepting such a gift might be permissible, it’s recommended to advise the giver to use their wealth for good and lawful purposes. Encouraging them to purify their wealth by giving charity or supporting those in need can be a virtuous act. This aligns with the Islamic principle of promoting good and forbidding evil. If the gift is given with the intention of getting rid of haram wealth and replacing it with halal earnings, this is considered a positive step towards repentance.

Ultimately, the permissibility of gifting or receiving a television depends on the individual’s conscience and their commitment to using it in accordance with Islamic principles. If there is doubt about the permissibility of a particular program or channel, it is always best to err on the side of caution and avoid it.
