Rian Johnson, the acclaimed writer and director behind Knives Out and Glass Onion, has started filming Season 2 of Peacock’s hit mystery series, Poker Face. This news comes hot on the heels of the start of production for his third Knives Out installment, Wake Up Dead Man. Johnson confirmed the exciting development on his Instagram story, sharing a picture of a clapboard emblazoned with the Poker Face logo.

Poker Face, a modern take on classic “case-of-the-week” mysteries like Columbo and Murder, She Wrote, stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a charismatic casino worker with an uncanny ability to detect lies. Season 1 saw Charlie traversing the American landscape, encountering a colorful cast of characters and solving a diverse range of intriguing murders. The show boasted an impressive roster of guest stars, including Benjamin Bratt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jameela Jamil, and Ron Perlman.

Johnson drew inspiration from the episodic nature of classic mystery shows, aiming to create a comforting familiarity for viewers while still delivering fresh and engaging stories each week. He emphasized the importance of character connection in an interview, stating that these shows are “more in common with sitcoms… you’re coming back every week to get a hit of something familiar, to hang out with a character or characters that you like.”

The series has garnered significant critical acclaim, earning a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for Natasha Lyonne’s performance. Peacock swiftly renewed the show for a second season due to its popularity, even before the first season concluded.
