JAG: A Classic Military Legal Drama

by

Donald Bellisario, creator of Magnum, P.I. and NCIS, also created the military legal drama JAG (Judge Advocate General). This long-running television show followed the classic Bellisario formula: a dedicated young U.S. Navy officer with a past shaped by an absent father, a strong ensemble cast, and a compelling mix of drama and humor. Initially airing on NBC, JAG found greater success and a longer run after moving to CBS.

The main character, Harmon Rabb, Jr., echoed Thomas Magnum but in the legal field. A former Navy aviator, Harm became a lawyer specializing in military law, navigating complex cases within the Navy’s legal system. The show’s pilot episode featured Andrea Parker, later of The Pretender fame, as Harm’s first partner.

Tracy Needham, as Meg Austin, was Harm’s legal partner during the first season on NBC. When the show switched to CBS, Catherine Bell joined as Sarah “Mac” Mackenzie, Harm’s new partner and a crucial character. Each partner brought a unique dynamic, contributing to the evolving storyline. The character interactions and relationships added depth to the series.

The “will they, won’t they” relationship between Harm and Mac became a central focus in later seasons, eventually causing some viewers, including this post’s author, to lose interest. However, many returned before the finale to see the romantic tension resolved. This common TV trope often sparks passionate debate among fans.

Beyond the main cast, JAG featured notable guest stars, including one of Jeff MacKay’s final network television appearances. This added an extra layer of interest for viewers familiar with his work. The show blended legal drama and military procedure, exploring the complexities of justice in the armed forces.

The original poster also wondered about a missed opportunity for a crossover with Magnum, P.I., imagining Harm investigating a case in Hawaii and encountering a retired Commander Thomas Magnum. This unrealized crossover highlights the shared Bellisario universe and the potential for exciting story intersections. The idea underscores the enduring popularity of both shows and fans’ desire to see their favorite characters interact.
