Slough House: MI5’s Underdogs Return in a New Season of Espionage

by

The core premise of the Mi5 Television Series, Slough House, remains captivating. River Cartwright and a team of disgraced MI5 agents find themselves exiled to Slough House, a dumping ground for those who’ve made career-ending mistakes. While seemingly sidelined, under the unorthodox leadership of their disheveled boss, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), these rejects consistently outsmart their more prestigious colleagues, preventing disasters and saving both MI5 and the nation.

This season brings back the energetic River, the pragmatic Louisa (Rosalind Eleazar), the dynamic duo of Shirley and Marcus (Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Kadiff Kirwan), the seasoned Catherine (Saskia Reeves), and the unkempt but indispensable tech expert, Roddy (Christopher Chung). A new addition, the enigmatic J.K. (Tom Brooke), initially contributes little but gradually reveals more throughout the season.

The witty banter among these flawed characters remains sharp and engaging. The emotional depth of Slough House, where cynicism barely conceals a longing for acceptance and reinstatement, continues to resonate. The acting is consistently strong, with standout performances from Gary Oldman as Lamb and Kristin Scott Thomas as his seemingly ruthless yet subtly compassionate superior.

The writing expertly portrays the show’s vibrant characters with subtle humor. In one scene, the new head of MI5’s tactical unit asks Lamb if he’s in charge of the rejects. Lamb’s response, “They don’t like being called that,” followed by “What do you call them?” and a final “The rejects,” perfectly encapsulates the show’s dry wit.

The season begins with seemingly unrelated events: a terrorist bombing in London and River’s apparent shooting by his grandfather, former MI5 chief David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce). As the narrative unfolds, these incidents become intricately connected, driving the season’s main plot. While the characters, dialogue, and performances remain exceptional, the overall plot of the season is slightly less compelling than previous installments.
