Taxi: The Classic TV Comedy That Drove Us to Laughter

When the creators of The Mary Tyler Moore Show left MTM, they brought their comedic genius to Taxi. Unlike sitcoms focused on one character, Taxi thrived as an ensemble comedy. Each character contributed to the show’s dynamic, creating a hilarious and relatable portrait of life in New York City.

Judd Hirsch played Alex Rieger, the paternal cab driver. He supported aspiring boxer Tony Banta (Tony Danza) and hopeful actor Bobby Wheeler (Jeff Conaway). Marilu Henner played the sharp-witted Elaine Nardo, completing the driver ensemble.

Andy Kaufman brought his unique humor to the show as Latka Gravas, a mechanic with nonsensical language and eccentric behavior. He added a layer of absurdity to the taxi company’s everyday struggles.

Danny DeVito’s Louie De Palma, the tyrannical dispatcher, became a television icon. He surpassed even Mr. Slate as the quintessential mean boss. Taxi also introduced DeVito to his future wife, Rhea Perlman.

Christopher Lloyd joined as Reverend Jim Ignatowski, a burnt-out hippie, in season two. His portrayal of a man grappling with societal norms resonated with audiences, especially in the episode where he tries to get his driver’s license.

Carol Kane joined later as Simka Dahblitz, Latka’s eccentric love interest and eventual wife. Their unconventional relationship added a unique perspective on love.

Taxi launched the careers of the creators of Cheers. While Taxi won 18 Emmy Awards, it was cancelled after moving to NBC. The show ended with the memorable line, “Thank you, Mr. Walters.”
