Benson’s Christmas Musical Revue: A Heartwarming Holiday Special

The 1980s sitcom Benson, a spin-off of SOAP, offered a comedic glimpse into California’s Governor’s Mansion. While known for humor, Benson‘s 1982 Christmas episode, “Mary and her Little Lambs,” delivered heartwarming musical richness.

The episode centers on Mary, the assistant cook, facing a custody battle for the two orphans she raises. Benson helps her navigate the legal complexities, ensuring Mary spends Christmas with the children at the Mansion. This touching story sets the stage for a spectacular musical revue at the Governor’s Christmas party.

The final act of “Mary and her Little Lambs” becomes a show-within-a-show, with party guests gathered around a piano. Denise and Pete provide accompaniment as the cast performs a Christmas carol medley.

The musical performances begin with a group rendition of “Joy to the World,” followed by solos. Governor Gatling sings “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” while Denise, Pete, Clayton, and young Katie sing verses of “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

Didi Conn, known as Frenchy in Grease, showcases her vocal talents as Denise. Adding diversity, Kraus beautifully sings “Stille Nacht” (“Silent Night”) in German.

The revue’s highlight is Robert Guillaume’s powerful performance of “O Holy Night.” Guillaume, a Tony-nominated star, transcends his comedic Benson persona with a breathtaking vocal performance.

The episode concludes with the cast breaking the fourth wall, offering individual holiday greetings. “Mary and her Little Lambs” memorably showcases how Benson used music to create a truly special Christmas episode.
