Hisense U7 Series TV Review: Budget-Friendly Performance

by

Hisense’s U7 series TVs offer a compelling blend of performance and affordability. Often retailing around $1,000 for a 65-inch model, the U7 series frequently goes on sale for $800 or less. This series boasts impressive features like quantum dot technology for vibrant colors, excellent gaming capabilities, and an improved Google TV interface. The newer U7N model improves upon the U7K with higher brightness and better backlighting.

The U7N is remarkably easy to set up. The panel is lightweight, and the new pedestal stand assembles easily. Hisense’s Google TV implementation streamlines software setup, enabling quick network connection, automatic login with saved Google credentials, and seamless Google service integration. The interface is generally responsive, though minor issues like brief volume muting during fast-forwarding or rewinding can occur.

Picture optimization requires some effort, but it’s manageable. For optimal viewing, switch to cinema-based picture modes like Theater Night or Filmmaker Mode for SDR content. For HDR content, Dolby Vision Dark mode excels, even in moderately lit rooms. The U7N’s brightness allows comfortable viewing in various lighting conditions. Maintaining high Local Dimming and Peak Brightness settings generally yields the best results.

A notable quirk is the U7N’s optical light sensor. It automatically adjusts brightness based on ambient lighting, but unlike most TVs, Hisense integrates it inconsistently into each picture mode. This requires manual adjustment within each mode to ensure the sensor is on or off as preferred. Remember to switch each mode from “Current” to “All Sources” to apply these settings universally.

While the U7 series is attractive for its price, potential buyers should be aware of possible quality control issues like screen uniformity problems. Hisense’s U8N or Sony’s Bravia 7 might be better alternatives for those prioritizing image quality and willing to spend more. However, the U7N offers a compelling combination of features and performance for those seeking a solid upgrade over basic 4K HDR TVs without overspending.
