Batman Casting: Actors Who Almost Played the Caped Crusader
The 1960s Batman TV series, starring Adam West, remains a pop culture icon. West’s portrayal, alongside Burt Ward’s Robin, defined the Dynamic Duo for a generation. But what if other actors had donned the cape and cowl? Let’s explore the “what ifs” of the Batman casting process.
James Garner, of Maverick fame, was a talented actor. However, his laid-back demeanor might not have suited the brooding Batman. While he possessed a comic book hero’s physique, his acting leaned more towards charming rogue than dark knight.
Even Jack Kelly, Garner’s Maverick co-star, might have been a more suitable Batman. Though Kelly’s performance in a Catwoman two-parter wasn’t memorable, he had a more serious acting style potentially suited to Batman.
Mike Henry, known for portraying Tarzan, was another potential Batman. He had the physique, but his acting skills might not have been enough. Batman demands not just physicality, but charisma and dramatic range.

Finally, there’s Jack Lord, of Hawaii Five-O fame. An unconventional choice, Lord was a serious contender for Captain Kirk in Star Trek around the same time. While his age might have been a concern, even in 1966, he possessed the commanding presence and serious demeanor of a very different Batman.
