Free TV Rescan: Your Guide to Finding Local Channels

by

Many local TV stations are changing frequencies. If you use an antenna for free over-the-air TV, rescan your TV to keep your channels. It’s easy, like the initial setup scan for your TV or converter box. You likely won’t need new equipment.

This change makes room for faster wireless services. Your channel numbers stay the same, but your TV needs the new frequencies. Rescanning finds and saves these. This ensures uninterrupted access to your favorite local broadcasts.

Changes continue nationwide through mid-2020, and stations transition at different times. You might need to rescan more than once. Broadcasters must give 30 days’ notice, so watch local news for updates.

Use the FCC’s interactive map to see rescan dates for your area. Enter your address for specific timing. Rescan periodically even if changes aren’t imminent; you might find new channels! The FCC offers how-to videos and guides.

Need help? Call the FCC toll-free at 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322) and press “6”. Help is available 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. ET, seven days a week. Cable and satellite users don’t need to rescan; their providers handle updates.
