Haitian authorities must swiftly investigate the February 23, 2020, arson attack on Radio Télévision Caraïbes, a prominent Haitian broadcaster in Port-au-Prince. Masked individuals, claiming to be police officers, stormed the station during a police protest, setting fire to vehicles, smashing windows, and destroying equipment, forcing the station off the air.

The attack occurred amidst widespread protests by Haitian National Police officers demanding better pay and working conditions. These protests included gunfire and vandalism. Radio Télévision Caraïbes was broadcasting live coverage of these protests when the attack happened.

According to programming director Marc Anderson Bregard, the attackers claimed affiliation with the protesting officers. While no one was injured, the damage was significant, interrupting broadcasting.

Haitian National Police Director Normil Rameau reportedly assured the station an investigation would be conducted. Radio Télévision Caraïbes has resumed broadcasting. Port-au-Prince police confirmed an investigation is underway. This attack highlights the dangers faced by journalists in Haiti, where violence against the press is a serious concern.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) demands a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible. The potential police involvement raises grave concerns about press freedom and journalist safety in Haiti. The CPJ and Reporters Without Borders contacted Haitian authorities in November 2019 regarding attacks on journalists, urging press protection. This attack underscores the urgent need for the Haitian government to address violence and threats against journalists. A full, transparent investigation is crucial to ensure accountability and prevent future attacks.
