Unanswered Questions from the Cancelled TV Show: Reaper
The CW’s short-lived series Reaper left fans hanging with numerous unresolved plotlines. The show, centered around Sam, a young man forced to work for the Devil retrieving escaped souls, possessed a unique premise and captivating characters. What would have happened if Reaper hadn’t been cancelled? Fortunately, creators Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have shed light on some of the mysteries that would have unfolded.
Fazekas and Butters, whose careers began on The X-Files, revealed they’d never been asked about Reaper‘s intended ending. They were eager to discuss the show’s mythology and the characters’ ultimate fates. One of the most intriguing characters was the Devil, played with devilish charm by Ray Wise.
Casting the Devil was paramount. While Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters, both Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumni, auditioned, Wise ultimately landed the role. Fazekas explained that Head’s British accent didn’t quite mesh with the Devil’s hipster slang and occasional hip-hop lines. Wise, however, perfectly embodied their vision.
The creators also shared that Ben, played by Rick Gonzalez, became an unexpected fan favorite. His complicated relationship with Nina and evolving role within the show’s mythology made him a standout. Gonzalez’s performance significantly shaped Ben’s character arc, transforming him from the pilot to the series finale.
One of Reaper‘s biggest mysteries revolved around the contents of Sam’s contract with the Devil, specifically the pages burned by Sam’s “supposed” father. What secrets did those pages conceal? What grand plan did the series have in store? These are questions that fans have long yearned for answers to.
