Reaper Television Show
The short-lived CW series Reaper left fans with many unanswered questions after its cancellation. The show, about a young man named Sam who works for the Devil collecting escaped souls, had a unique premise and compelling characters. What would have happened if the show had continued? Luckily, the creators, Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, have revealed some of the mysteries that would have unfolded.
Fazekas and Butters, who started their careers working on The X-Files, shared that no one had ever asked them about the planned ending for Reaper. They were more than willing to discuss the show’s mythology and the ultimate fate of its characters. One of the most intriguing characters was the Devil, played brilliantly by Ray Wise.
Casting the Devil was a crucial decision. While Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters, both known for their roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, auditioned, Wise ultimately won the part. Fazekas explained that Head’s British accent didn’t fit the Devil’s hipster lingo and occasional hip-hop dialogue they had written. Wise, on the other hand, perfectly embodied their vision for the character.
The creators also revealed that the character of Ben, played by Rick Gonzalez, became a surprise favorite. His complex love story with Nina and his evolving role within the show’s mythology made him a standout. Gonzalez’s portrayal significantly shaped Ben’s development, transforming him from the pilot episode to the series finale.
One of the biggest mysteries of Reaper was the content of Sam’s contract with the Devil, particularly the pages burned by Sam’s “supposed” father. What secrets did those pages hold? What was the overarching plan for the series? These are questions that fans have longed to have answered.
