Do Text Messages Interfere With Television Reception?

by

For the past 18 months, some HDTV users have reported experiencing channel interference whenever an iPhone 3G is used near the television. This issue has been observed across various HDTV models (Philips, Dynex) and Comcast converter box models (DCT6200 & DCH3200), even with a new, heavily shielded HDMI cable. The problem persists despite attempts to isolate the cause. A similar issue has not been reported with Blackberry Curve devices.

The interference primarily affects HD channels and seems to be related to the proximity of the iPhone. The question remains: how can a wireless device like an iPhone interfere with a hardwired cable television signal? The leading theory suggests some form of wireless frequency interference or leakage. Is it possible the iPhone’s 3G signal, operating around 800MHz, is somehow disrupting the television signal?

Extensive troubleshooting, including swapping cables, equipment, and connections, hasn’t resolved the issue. This eliminates obvious culprits like poorly shielded cables or faulty connections. The mystery deepens as users struggle to pinpoint the source of the interference. Could it be related to the cable modem, wireless router, or the iPhone switching between AT&T wireless and local Wi-Fi networks?

While the exact cause remains unknown, the correlation between iPhone proximity and television interference is undeniable. The issue persists across different television and cable box models, pointing towards a common external factor. Further investigation is needed to determine if specific iPhone models or network configurations are more susceptible to causing this interference. The search for a solution continues, leaving affected users wondering if their text messages are truly the culprit behind their television troubles.
