Television Screen Repair: Troubleshooting a Sony Bravia

by

A Sony Bravia television, over a decade old, began exhibiting display issues several months ago. Initially, lines appeared on the left side of the screen, disappearing as the TV warmed up. This was accompanied by dimming on the same side, also resolving with warm-up. The problems gradually worsened, persisting even after the television reached operating temperature. Online resources suggested loose ribbon cables as a potential cause, recommending applying pressure along the top edge of the screen. Applying pressure to a specific spot on the left side temporarily resolved the issue, suggesting a loose connection. This fix lasted for about a week before requiring repeated applications of pressure. Eventually, this method failed to provide any improvement.

Further investigation involved removing the TV’s back cover to examine the ribbon cables. While pressing on the cables, the picture briefly improved before a prominent white vertical line, with a thinner green line in its center, appeared. This new line aligned perfectly with one of the ribbon cables, further implicating a connection issue. Now, in addition to the original darkening and ghosting, the persistent white line remains. Interestingly, the darkening on the left side diminishes when the entire screen displays bright content, like a snowy landscape, but reappears in darker scenes, rendering that side almost black. The question remains whether the cable itself is faulty, a connection remains loose, or if component replacement is necessary.

While replacing the television is an option, understanding the root cause of the problem allows for potential repair and repurposing of the TV. Troubleshooting steps so far point towards a ribbon cable issue, but further diagnosis is needed to determine the specific fault and the necessary Television Screen Repair solution. Whether it’s a simple reconnection, cable replacement, or a more complex repair, addressing the issue could give this Sony Bravia a second life.
