Defy Television: A New Free Digital Broadcast Network

by

Jonathan Katz, a pioneer in digital broadcast networks, launched Defy, a free over-the-air television network, under his company Free TV Networks. The network, available in approximately 85% of US households, focuses on unscripted reality programming from A+E Networks.

Katz’s History With Defy and Digital Broadcasting

Katz has a significant history in the digital broadcasting landscape. He previously founded Katz Networks, which launched successful channels like Bounce, Laff, Grit, and a revived Court TV. Katz Networks also launched a channel named Defy in 2022 under the ownership of E.W. Scripps Co., who acquired Katz Networks in 2017. However, Scripps later replaced that iteration of Defy with Ion Plus. This new Defy network, under Free TV Networks, represents a revival of the brand name, capitalizing on its existing recognition among viewers who enjoy unscripted content. A spokesperson for Free TV Networks confirmed the name change was motivated by the desire to maintain the Defy brand for its dedicated audience.

Defy’s Programming Lineup and Target Audience

Defy provides a curated selection of popular reality shows, including American Pickers, Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, Alone, Swamp People, Counting Cars, and Ax Men. This programming caters to viewers seeking engaging unscripted content, particularly those interested in adventure, history, and unique lifestyles. The network offers a cost-effective entertainment option for viewers, delivering high-quality programming without subscription fees. This strategy directly addresses the needs of value-conscious consumers seeking compelling content.

Free TV Networks’ Expanding Portfolio

Defy joins Free TV Networks’ growing portfolio of digital broadcast networks. Earlier this year, the company launched The365, targeting African-American viewers, and Outlaw, featuring Western-themed programming. Both The365 and Outlaw were launched in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, Lionsgate, and Gray Television. The addition of Defy further diversifies Free TV Networks’ offerings, broadening its reach across various demographics and programming genres. Defy’s launch solidifies Free TV Networks’ commitment to providing free, accessible, and engaging television content to a wide audience.
