Manchester Public Television Set to Move to Former Transit Center
Manchester Public Television (MPTV) is poised to relocate to the former Manchester Transit Center on Canal and Granite Streets. Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig highlighted the challenges in finding a suitable tenant for the space due to its unique layout. The proposal, recommended by the Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen Lands and Buildings Committee, aims to address this vacancy while potentially saving the city money.
Manchester Public Television Seeks New Home
Currently, the City of Manchester allocates $55,000 annually for MPTV’s current 6,200 square foot Elm Street location, which houses two television studios, a radio studio, and office space. MPTV Executive Director Jason Cote expressed optimism about the proposed move to the 3,200 square foot former transit center, believing it to be a more efficient and cost-effective solution. He consulted with MPTV’s board members who agreed with the assessment.
Potential Cost Savings for Manchester Public Television and the City
Cote emphasized MPTV’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, noting the station’s stable budget over the past 12 years, fluctuating by only about $20,000. He hopes the relocation to a smaller facility will further reduce expenses for both MPTV and the city. This move aligns with the city’s broader efforts to optimize resource allocation.
The proposed relocation to the former transit center is slated for March 2024, pending approval from the full Board of Mayor and Aldermen. This initiative demonstrates a collaborative approach between the city and Manchester Public Television to ensure the station’s continued operation while maximizing taxpayer dollars.
Future of Manchester’s Transportation Hub
Coincidentally, Mayor Craig’s proposed budget includes $1 million in local matching funds for a new transportation center. This investment underscores the city’s dedication to improving public transportation infrastructure. The rendering below illustrates the envisioned design for the new transportation hub.

The relocation of Manchester Public Television to the former transit center represents a potential win-win scenario for both the station and the city. It allows for the repurposing of an existing facility, potentially saving taxpayer money, while providing Manchester Public Television with a suitable new home. The move also highlights Manchester’s ongoing commitment to both public broadcasting and the modernization of its transportation infrastructure.
