by

Turkey’s television landscape is unique and vibrant, driven by a passionate audience with distinct preferences. This analysis delves into the key trends shaping Turkey Television, exploring genre preferences, original content performance, and the most popular series dominating the market.

Genre Preferences: The Reign of Drama in Turkey Television

Drama reigns supreme in Turkey television. A staggering 57.8% of total series demand in Q1 2023 was for drama, a significantly higher proportion than any other market analyzed in the Global Television Demand Report. This dominance impacts other genres, with animation and reality shows capturing a mere 6.5% and 3.6% of demand share, respectively. These figures are less than half their global averages, highlighting the overwhelming preference for dramatic narratives in Turkey.

Interestingly, the strong demand for drama hasn’t diminished the appetite for comedy, which holds a respectable 14.8% demand share. Within the drama genre, romantic drama takes the lead as the most in-demand subgenre, a unique distinction for Turkey. Other drama subgenres like soap operas, family dramas, and action dramas also exhibit exceptionally high demand, showcasing the diverse palate of Turkish viewers. Romantic comedy also thrives, ranking as the sixth most popular subgenre.

Original Content and Platform Performance in Turkey Television

Fox Türkiye’s commitment to original programming has propelled it to the forefront of the Turkey television market. Its content captured 10.6% of total series demand in Q1 2023, surpassing all other platforms analyzed in the report. Following closely behind are local networks Star TV, Show TV, Kanal D, and ATV, collectively commanding a 31.7% demand share.

In contrast, global streaming giant Netflix secured only a 5% demand share, placing sixth in the ranking. This lower performance compared to other markets underscores the strong preference for local content within Turkey television.

Turkey’s Top Television Series: Local Productions Dominate

Local dramas dominate the list of Turkey’s most in-demand television series. One Love (Kızılcık Şerbeti) led the pack in Q1 2023, boasting an exceptional demand 29.5 times the average series. While dramas dominate the top spots, Erkenci Kuş, a romantic comedy from Star TV, emerged as the most popular comedy with demand 22.8 times the average. Forbidden Fruit (Yasak Elma), a Fox Türkiye production, secured a strong position with demand 19.7 times the average.

Conclusion: A Unique Landscape for Turkey Television

The Turkey television market exhibits a distinct preference for locally produced dramas, highlighting the cultural significance and high quality of domestic productions. While global platforms are present, local networks and original content continue to dominate, shaping a unique and dynamic television landscape. The strong performance of specific genres and subgenres, particularly within the drama category, underscores the nuanced preferences of Turkish viewers and offers valuable insights for content creators and distributors.
