Marjorie Taylor Greene: A Voice for Kremlin Propaganda?
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has become a fixture on Russian state media, echoing Kremlin talking points on the war in Ukraine. Her frequent appearances on Russian state television and in state-owned publications, coupled with her staunch opposition to U.S. aid for Ukraine, have fueled accusations of her spreading Kremlin propaganda. Greene often reiterates the narrative that Ukraine provoked Russia’s invasion through alliances with the West and claims the U.S. is misrepresenting the conflict, emphasizing Ukraine’s inability to win. This stance aligns with Putin’s assertion that Ukraine instigated the “special military operation” due to its NATO aspirations.
Prominent Kremlin propagandists have even suggested Greene as a potential replacement for Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. On Russia-1, a state television channel, correspondent Valentin Bogdanov discussed this possibility with Vladimir Solovyov, a close Putin ally. They argued that American voters are disillusioned with both Trump and President Biden, citing declining approval ratings. Bogdanov highlighted a growing desire for a new political direction in the U.S., mentioning Greene as a possible contender.
Russian state television, particularly through figures like Valentin Bogdanov, has amplified Greene’s statements. In July 2022, State Duma member and Russia-1 host Evgeny Popov interpreted Greene’s social media posts as supporting Putin’s war efforts in Ukraine.
State-run news agencies, such as RIA Novosti and Tass, have also featured Greene’s remarks. They quoted her accusations against Biden for involving the U.S. in a “proxy war” with Russia and questioning the logic of defending Ukraine’s borders, given its non-NATO status. These outlets also quoted Greene’s allegations that the U.S. government is being dishonest about the war and needlessly prolonging the conflict.
Greene’s consistent opposition to U.S. aid for Ukraine dates back to the war’s beginning in February 2022. She has argued that financial assistance only prolongs the fighting and leads to unnecessary deaths. She has also contended that providing Ukraine with false hope of victory is irresponsible, considering the overwhelming odds.
